As HP’s first all in one product line to support Macintosh computers, the G series broke new ground in its day, combing time tested print technology with such features as network faxing and scanning. Utilizing drop on demand thermal imaging technology, the HP OfficeJet G85, and other models in the G series, are capable of producing 2400 x 1200 dot per inch imagery onto photo paper, as well as standard 600 x 600 dot per inch text for standard documents.
With print speeds of up to 12 pages per minute in black and white and 10 pages per minute in color, the HP OfficeJet G85 falls behind newer models on raw performance alone, but the series does offer an impressively extensive array of incorporated hardware features for printing, faxing, copying, and scanning.
The HP OfficeJet G85 supports walk up features such as scanning directly to applications from the front panel, and stand alone color faxing. Paper handling comes in the form of a 150 sheet input tray, and the maximum monthly duty cycle for the G series is a very limited 5,000 total sheets.
Thanks to a flip up top, flatbed design, the HP OfficeJet G85 can copy and scan full, legal sized paper, as well as optically scan at a resolution of up to 600 x 2400 dots per inch in 8 bit black and white or incredible 36 bit color. A built in 30 page automatic document feeder makes both copying and scanning much easier when dealing with large quantities of input, while a copy rate of up to 12 copies per minute monotone and 9.2 copies per minute color keeps things moving along at a decent speed.
Scanning can be done in resolutions of up to 600 x 3600 dots per inch optically, or up to 9600 dots per inch in enhancement mode. The HP OfficeJet G85 scans in 36 bit color internally, and then uses a unique process of downscaling to 24 bit export quality, using only the best 24 bits. 8 bit grayscale is also selectable for faster scans.
The HP OfficeJet G85 fully supports PC faxing when using a host computer, while network faxing is only possible for sending, and when an HP Jetdirect external print server is connected. 125 programmable speed dials and 10 one touch, dedicated keys help to save time when dealing with large numbers or recipients, and a 125 page fax memory assists in storing incoming faxes, even while the G series is occupied with other processes. Broadcasting is also possible, though only to 25 locations at once.
Other helpful fax features include delayed faxing, a junk fax barrier, ring detect with automatic fax / answering machine switching, and a consumer replaceable fax module assembly and line interface unit. By combining four office appliances into a single color device, the HP OfficeJet G85 offers buyers a chance to save both space and money, though its low print speed and monthly duty cycle limit it to being a light duty device, suitable for a home user.
